One Proud Papa

We would like to congratulate Austin Shepherd and his Alabama teammates for their achievements on the football field this year with a 11 and 1 season.  Austin, #79, plays the position of Tackle for the Crimson Tide!

Austin is the son of our Sales Manager, Eric Shepherd. Eric has been a permanent fixture here at Akins for over 19 years. He started his career as a salesman back in 1992 and chances are if you have ever bought a vehicle here you may have just bought it from Eric.

Job well done Austin, and congratulations to your whole family. If you haven't heard, there is a big game coming up on the 9th of January and all we can say is "ROLL TIDE!"

2013 Dodge Dart
Dodge's new small car arrives, with a heavy Italian accent.

Dodge has pulled the sheet off of its new Alfa Romeo–based 2013 compact car and announced that it will be called Dart. Set to debut in January at the Detroit auto show, the Dart features three engines and three transmission options and aggressive styling reminiscent of the larger Charger. We’ve only got one question: How do you say “Dart” in Italian? Actually, it’s a three-part question: Wouldn’t you rather say “Demon” in Italian? Or “Hornet”?

If the resurrected Dart name had you daydreaming of late-1960s Mopar muscle, we’ll stop you right here. The 2013 Dart rides on a front-wheel-drive platform adapted from the Alfa Romeo Giulietta. Compared to the Giulietta, the Dart is wider and longer, its new architecture dubbed Compact U.S. Wide. Don’t let all of the air out of the Fun Balloon quite yet; the small Alfa is a fine driver’s car (you can read our drive of a 2010 Giulietta here). Click here to read the full article.

Strong Wrangler, Liberty sales prompt Jeep to keep plant running over holidays.

by Jermy Korzeniewski
Dec 12th 2011

The only automotive plants from the Detroit Three that will be humming along straight through the holiday season are in Toledo, Ohio. As the birthplace of the Jeep brand, Toledo's fortunes rise and fall with the successes and failures of Chrysler's off-road marque, and this year, the automaker will be looking for volunteers to continue assembling its hot-selling Wrangler and Liberty SUVs.

According to Automotive News, no other plant operated by an American automaker will be working during the week between Christmas and New Year's Day. The Toledo plants are the only facilities building the Jeep Wrangler and Liberty, both of which are selling like hot cakes in 2011. With one month left of the year, Jeep has sold 111,045 Wranglers, up 29 percent over 2010. The Liberty, meanwhile, is up 36 percent to 60,523 units sold.

Akins would like to take a moment and remind everyone during this hustle and bustle time of the year, to please slow down and don't forget to wear your seat belt. Have a Safe and Happy New Year!

Making A Difference
Halfway Around The World

Jessica Akins began her journey to Jinja, Uganda on July 31. She was headed to the unknown to start a new chapter in her life. Not knowing what to expect and excited to experience something beyond her comprehension.

After arriving she realized her wonderful experiences were going to be great but also very difficult. Her task while she was over in Africa was working with Ekisa, a children’s home, full of children with special needs.  Their disabilities stretched from physical, mental, and emotional.  Each child with a different need that required specific assistance.  She quickly learned how to take care of children who needed constant help;  for example one child had a speech disability and could not speak, and another who  vomited at least every hour.  These children at Ekisa have such a joy in their lives yet from the circumstances they come from have no obligation to be happy. She worked with kids who come from all different walks of life.  During this she witnessed the death of a young child who never got the chance to fully experience life. That same day she got to experience new life with a child being born.  These are some things most of us will never have the opportunity to experience.

I must say Jessica did get to have a little fun of her own while in Africa, she went bungee jumping over the Nile River dropping 200 feet! She made dinner one night by chopping off a chickens head so they could have some meat.  Chicken to her will never be the same!

Although this is just a short glimpse of her journey words could never express how this trip changed her life. The kids and people in Africa stole a place in Jessica’s heart.  She plans to continue her work and journey back to Jinja in February 2012. Please pray that she will do what God’s will is for her while she is  there and that God will forever change her life because of it.

Motor Trend / 2012 Truck Of The Year
By Michael Febbo

You Know that feeling you get when you see a supercar sitting in the parking lot of the local six-buck-a-cup coffee shop? The ache in your stomach, knowing that toddling back and forth from the gated community to the strip mall is all the driving that poor car will ever do? We get that same feeling when we see an F-150 that doesn't have at least 1000 pounds in the bed or 5000 pounds hanging off the hitch. Just like that supercar, the F-150 is a tool built for a purpose. It has a goal in life, and the people who never use it as it was intended are squandering the truck's ability and a heritage that goes back to 1948. To continue reading click here.
